Island Summer
Beautiful watercolor illustrations of island life. The story line is simple yet inviting by how it captures the warmth of summer filled with fun, new friends and beautiful island scenery. The story will engage readers in thoughts of not only the descriptions themselves, but the use of alliterations throughout the story are pleasing and altogether soothing to the ear.

A great book!
I really like this book. Robin is bored. Melissa Berger becomes her friend. They sleep over. But when Robin finds Melissa reading her diary, she gets mad at her. Then Jenny moves next door. They become best friends. They even tie a rope between their houses. A basket is on the rope, so they can send messages back and forth. But then, Jenny's parents get a divorce. Her dad is in love with another girl. Her mom wants to move to Texas. Neither one of them want Jenny. Jenny gets to live with her grandparents in Chicago. Melissa is Robin's friend again. But Robin will never forget her Jenny summer.

Jim's Last Summer: Lessons on Living from a Dying Priest
Published in Paperback by Orbis Books (March, 2002)
Author: Teresa Rhodes McGee
Average review score:

Priceless Lessons
The Renaissance philosopher Sir Thomas Browne wrote the "Life is the shadow of death, and light is the shadow of God." This beautifully written, short but incredibly rich book about the author's visits with a dying missionary priest casts revealing and ultimately glowing light on the subjects of terminal illness, suffering, death, and--most important--living life to its fullest. The priest, Father Jim, approaches his terminal cancer with the same honesty and courage with which he earlier conquered his alcoholism. His death has more than dignity; it has Grace. This is the best book I have ever seen on the subjects of addiction and dying. Both carry stigmas in our society; if any book can help remove them, this this the one. Meanwhile, it will not fail to raise the reader's spirit!

A Kid's Summer EcoJournal: With Nature Activities for Exploring the Season
Published in Paperback by Trickle Creek Books (10 June, 1998)
Authors: Toni Albert and Margaret Brandt
Average review score:

Experience the season!
I own three of the four books in this series and have found all of them to be full of useful information. I use them with my second grade daughter as well as with my preschool class of three and four year old children. The artwork by Margaret Brandt is accurate and detailed. The factual information is presented simply yet thoroughly. Throughout the book the author, Toni Albert, shares some of her personal journal and encourages the reader to do the same. No project requires unusual materials, everything can be found or easily obtained at little or no cost. I will be buying the final book in this series soon.

Kingdom of Summer
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (December, 1992)
Average review score:

Unique twist on an old story...
If you're looking for yet another re-telling of La Morte d'Arthur, look somewhere else. If you love Arthurian legend, but are interested in reading something a little different, Gillian Bradshaw's trilogy is fascinating, enjoyable, heart-breaking and impossible to put down.

Even though sorcery and the Otherworld are prominent features in the books, the characters are realistic -- people that are easy to relate to. These books bring Arthur's Britain to life from a more historical (as opposed to legendary) perspective.

The trilogy consists of "Hawk of May", "Kingdom of Summer" and "In Winter's Shadow". The first begins with Gwalchmai's (Gawaine's) childhood and ends with his acceptance into Arthur's Family. The second continues Gwalchmai's tale, but is told from the perspective of his servant. The third book is narrated by Gwynhwyfar (Guinevere).

"Kingdom of Summer" is about Gwalchmai's search for the lady he loves, Elidan, and his eventual confrontation with his mother, Morgause, the evil sorceress. Other great characters, (along with Arthur & Gwynhwyfar) make appearances: Medraut (Mordred), Bedwyr (Bedivere), Gwalchaved (Galahad), Lot of Orcade, Agravain, Cei (Kay), Urien of Rheged, Maelgwn of Gwynedd, etc, etc. Don't look for Chretien de Troye's literary creation, Lancelot -- these books do very well without him.

All three books are equally well written -- I can't recommend one more than another. There are more reviews written on the first book. Personally, this trilogy is my favorite Arthurian tale to date.

Knight in Shining Rust: Emotional Support for the Abused Woman
Published in Paperback by Esteem Publishing (24 October, 2002)
Author: Jackie Summers
Average review score:

What an esteem booster! Now I know how he wore me down...
This book made me feel so much better about what is going on in my life. I could relate to the experiences written about and felt like it was my own life. Abusers know how to use tactics to make women scared and self doubt their decisions. I feel so much stronger now and know how to begin to dig my way out of this destructive relationship. I highly recommend it to anyone that is being abused in any form. Jackie didn't hold anything back in her book.
